I listened to the whole video and am still trying to find the "feminist" part mentioned in the thread title. Yeah dude mentions feminists but the women's views arent any different than typical everyday women. And they are right. I wouldnt want my daughter to be followed around by random men in the streets. WTF

I understand what you are saying but she is feminist and she said 'you men need to understand us women' and when Fredericka mentioned that the video was biased and just showed black and latino men; she did not say anything:sas1:. She kept he fukking mouth shut and did not say shyt; gotta play that role:russ:. Remember she's from Grenada.

i don't even necessarily have a problem with women who feel uncomfortable. i can't tell them to feel safe if they don't, but the agenda of the viral video is abundantly clear. they put a white woman walking through NYC then edited it so only black and brown men are harassing the white woman. what message does that send? especially to racist cacs that are all over that video's youtube comments. if the woman was black then 90% of those white men commenting wouldn't give a fukk.

if this is a real safety issue for women and it probably is (see the guy who was walking right next to her for 5 minutes) then it should be addressed in some form or fashion. however the way this has been gone about is already clearly racialized. making it essentially illegal for men that women don't like to speak to them in public opens up a serious can of worms. you also know it will be disproportionately applied to minorities just like stop and frisk laws. i'm sure a lot of whites in general want to pass a law that protects them from "dangerous" minorities that they fear simply because they have been portrayed as violent and dangerous by the media.

i don't offer a solution either. not every single problem has an easy solution. i am offering a serious critique on the message sent by that video though.

There is nothing said in that video that i wouldnt expect to hear from everyday women that are annoyed by the harassment

What's street harassment?

What is Street Harassment?

Street harassment is a form of sexual harassment that takes place in public spaces. At its core is a power dynamic that constantly reminds historically subordinated groups (women and LGBTQ folks, for example) of their vulnerability to assault in public spaces.

Further, it reinforces the ubiquitous sexual objectification of these groups in everyday life. Street harassment can be sexist, racist, transphobic, homophobic, ableist, sizeist and/or classist. It is an expression of the interlocking and overlapping oppressions we face and it functions as a means to silence our voices and “keep us in our place.” At Hollaback!, we believe that what specifically counts as street harassment is determined by those who experience it. If you’ve experienced street harassment, we’ve got your back! - See more at: http://www.ihollaback.org/about/#sthash.PQmNgUvG.dpuf

F it, here we go...

(paraphrasing) "As a man, you should listen to us women saying 'we don't like it' and tell your 'brothas' to stop..."

I have no control over what the next dude does.

Also - is it "equality", or no?

If you wanna be "equal", it would be equal to (as ol' boy said) stand up for yourself in reply.
"B-b-b-but, we gon' get killt like ol' gurl in Detroit, doe!"
So what's gonna happen to me if I step up to the same crazy dude on some #Youoksis ish?? Me get murked?
Besides, if I interfere with you handling the situation, aren't I minimizing your efforts - "shaming" you in some way?

Yeah iono 'bout all this...

We can create norms around oppressive behavior to discourage it and show why it is wrong. Shouldn't decent white people intervene to try to undermine white privilege/supremacy and challenge other white people on their racism? Likewise, men should intervene to challenge other men when sexist and patriarchal attitudes and behaviors are expressed.

So street harassment is just a new term to encompass everything from catcalling to stuff that's already illegal like sexual harassment and sexual assault? People have to be fukking kidding me with this bullshyt :russ:.

The ONLY thing that isn't illegal with this street harassment bs is catcalling, but people are trying to throw everything under one banner known as street harassment so it gains validity when it just makes it look even more silly.
If women are being sexually assaulted then call the police and they will handle it since it's already a crime.

You don't see how these things are tied together breh? :dwillhuh:

If a group of white people surrounded you and started shouting racist slurs and perhaps posturing aggressively, you don't think that is tied to the historical memory of lynch mobs? You wouldn't feel threatened?

I don't consider "good morning" to be street harassment, but when a dude opens up a convo with a sexual comment... there's a short distance to a potentially violent situation against the woman if she rebuffs the advance.
