Bruh, the question is do you start ostracizing people because they didn't get a chance to connect? Or do you try to bring them into the fold? I see this w/ some Africans in corporate America when they don't necessarily see racism and shyt the way I might. We cast them aside? Even if they're not hurting us? I don't agree w/ that.

This is valid - I'm in a spot now where I can't even hang w/ coworkers on the weekend because I don't skii, play golf, like tennis, or hike...that shyt costs a bunch of money and to be honest I'm not interested in spending like I have parents who passed down whole houses, paid for all of my school, etc., like they are. shyt's frustrating but at the same time, if need be, I'll participate if I ever feel like it's seriously hurting my career.

True.

Fair.

The African-American has been accepting of all of the above and all it did was allow others to flood into our communities and pal up with White supremacy against us. If you are Black and you don’t connect with African-American culture the onus is on your to learn up not on us to accept you. Last thing we need is more people in our community looking like us but thinking like “them”. We let that shyt go on for far too long with Caribbean and Continental African c00ns with no connection to us speaking on our behalf.

...and yes other communities do have the ”talking white” issue but first things first is emigrating to the USA saved them from their shythole country so the white man is their savior. Secondly, it’s the c00n classes of those people that have flooded the USA and so they take pride in being as close to whiteness as possible. African-Americans were and are oppressed by the US Government so acting like White people means you’re acting like the oppressor which harkens back to house vs. field negro and the Black overseers.

Serious question, what does "talking white" sound like for an Indian or Chinese American vs. being true to their culture? This is where you lose me - having a professional standard to speak English the way it's taught in schools isn't some huge requirement. Are we really trying to die on this hill??? shyt's silly to me. If you're technically capable of a job at Google, you'll also have the educational background to at least speak English the way it's been taught. Should Mexicans be able to speak Spanglish in meetings?

People are basically saying coming from a non dysfunctional background equals complete assimilation or lack of Black "authenticity". It's very disturbing again. Exclude those who come from a Black immigrant background because it's like the go to move around these parts to discredit someone from having an opinion.

Robert Smith "ADOS" "Foundational Black" STILL would not have passed the standard of Blackness. He is a billionaire from a two parent household both parents teachers ivy league educated undergrad and post grad from Colorado Goldman Sachs alum YET substantially contributed to the construction of the AA museum in DC and just made headlines by paying down studen debts of Morehouse grads and has goven every indication through actions that he values his community and race wants to do everything for the betterment through a lot of philanthropic work.

This discussion and posts remi d me of that Fab Five documentary where Jalen Rose basically hated Grant Hill another "ADOS" Black American because he thought he was not Black enough because he went to Duke and came from a two parent household solid stable background while he was raised in Detroit not knowing his father and was one of some 12 children that his father had with 11 women. So i guess that type of dysfunction is supposed to be integral to thr true Black American experience and if you are not in those parameters your Blackness is questioned.

African-American Vernacular English is not unprofessional and it’s not less proper than Standard American English. If we are going to go down that road then Standard American English is nothing but a bunch of slang because it’s a derivative of British English.

You guys are in here revealing how you really feel about African-Americans and if you happen to be ADOS shame on you. You look at your own culture as negative and buy into having to divorce it to get along.

I know how to code switch but I don’t do it because it’s more professional, I do it to play the game and get ahead. 99% of the time even in corporate meetings I don’t code switch, I speak African American Vernacular English but I’m intelligent AF so I end up sounding like an intelligent Black man rather than some clown impersonating a WASP.

You’re not African-American so your opinion is irrelevant.

Couldn't respond to what i laid out so you went for the usual as expected couldn't refute anything the man on your avi had a Caribbean mother (Grenada specifically) so technically didn't fulfill your purity "ADOS" test so making his opinions and experiences on race in America invalid according to your logic.

Nah breh, I know language itself is very fluid and that no one language or dialect is inherently better or more valuable than the next. That extends to AAVE.

I also know that pushing for AAVE to be accepted in the workplace is a long uphill battle and I'm not aware of any other dialects that get that treatment. Why would we expect it for AAVE? And you don't see the issue with saying you have to speak AAVE in order to sound like a Black man? Again, if you were Mexican and started speaking Spanglish or Spanish in a meeting, shyt wouldn't fly either. That doesn't mean that you have to completely abandon speaking that language, you just do it outside of work.

This is just a weird hang up to me and I'm not trolling - you may have a valid perspective on this but i really don't understand why it's so central.

Because you cant debunk it by being objective and have a frank discussion why even respond to my post? All you resort to is name calling with made up words.

For the millionth time which hasn't have to do with cowadice and whatever words you used to describe my post,
Malcom X the man on your avi which I assume you somewhat revere had a CARIBBEAN MOTHER FROM GRENADA making him not fulfill the ADOS purity test that people who reason like you often utilize to shut down informed opinions you dont agree with. Malcolm X therefore since he isnt a a "full ADOS" should not comment or have a stance on American race issues with your warped logic. Happy Labor Day.

You are so mentally compromised that you are blaming employment discrimination on African-Americans rather than the source, White America.

She is not saying the candidates are “not Black enough” she is saying that Google doesn’t hire African-Americans who are culturally African-American”. There’s a nuance there that you are not grasping because you’re most likely triggered by the assertion.

The issue here is that Google and corporate culture in general does not respect African-American culture and asks for us to divorce ourselves or it in the sake of “professionalism”.
What is “culturally African American” and what is the bar for this?
Also, who is she or you or I to define it?

If you don’t know what African-American culture is then you need to do some research before you even start speaking your two cents. You don’t even understand the basics of the argument...no shade at all but it’s like seeing Astrophysicists talk about time dilation and you like “what’s physics and who defines it?” At that point you show yourself to be unqualified to participate in the discussion.

:russ: Say no more. I asked a question that you made sound so simple to answer yet you can’t even answer it, nor did you attempt to answer it, but rather try to belittle me. You got it.

I didn’t belittle you at all I simply said that if you don’t know the subject we are speaking on then you should do your research first and then come back. If you’re genuine about understanding you will do your research but your response makes me think that your aim is muddle the conversation with semantic objections.
