CARRBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — The principal of Carrboro High School has been placed on administrative leave, district officials said Tuesday.
In a letter sent to families and staff, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Chief of Staff and School Leadership Brady Reeves said the high school was being investigated for “various matters”. As part of the investigation, Principal Helena Thomas was placed on paid administrative leave.
“This paid leave is not a disciplinary measure or change of job assignment,” Reeves said in a statement. “It is a temporary status so these matters can be investigated.
Following the district’s action, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP held a press conference on Wednesday at 11 a.m. They requested that Thomas retain all of her responsibilities as principal, including participating in the Carrboro High graduation on Saturday, until an investigation determines that action is necessary.
“In light of the recent walk out by students and parents May 29, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP insists the district office communicates and follows proper protocols and fair due process before taking any corrective actions against Dr. Thomas,” branch President Herman Foushee said in a statement. “Our support for Dr. Thomas emphasizes the NAACP’s commitment to the intersectionality of racial justice and employment and economic equity.”
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP also praised Thomas’ work as principal, noting she was offered a new four-year contract in April.
According to the NAACP branch, Carrboro High holds a 75% in the 2024 North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions survey, had the highest scores in the three Panorama student surveys from last spring to this spring, and holds an overall school performance grade of B.
Thomas has served as Carrboro High’s principal since the 2023-24 school year, according to her LinkedIn.
