the problem is that these young black men and women are so lacking in basic critical thinking skills that "how to know" is not only not a thought that they can generate but "what to know" isn't either.

So many young lost black men out here. Dude had no clue what was going on. This is more common than it’s not.

You’re missing the point and now you sound stupid respectfully. For all we know dude has a learning disability and 95% of the time criminal cases end in a plea deal so clients depend on their defense attorney to get them the best deal possible. The judge showed leniency by even bringing it up and then went the extra mile by pushing for it. It was the defense attorneys job to bring it up as even a possibility so the client was aware of his options and could make an informed decision if the option was presented to him.
