He's kinda right on this. There is a whole other world to whole life insurance policies most people dont know about.
For instance, they have a cash value beyond the "death pay out" which can be withdrawn against the policy while the holder is still alive. Some people use them as investment viehcle as well cause the cash value can get a garunteed (tax protected) growth of 4-6% as opposed to the stock market which fluctuates often. I think a few of these policies even have a clause in there for "technical deaths" by being incapicitated or becoming a vegetable.
My only issue is that she may not have payed into the policy long enough to get a feasible cash value out of it. It takes 15-20yrs for the cash value of a policy to become substantial and she is only 27. I doubt she couldve had a policy that long.
Personally, i think a short (and accompanying long term) disability policy wouldve been a better choice. However, black people rarely get into these types of insurances and god knows we often too superstitious to talk about them at the dinner table like other issues.

There are some policies that pay you a rate based on how many days you are in the hospital. In Canada, at least.
