Florida woman faces court for killing lottery winner

Thursday, November 29, 2012

TAMPA, Florida (AP) — Abraham Shakespeare could barely read, only write his name in block letters and had given away most of his US$17 million in lottery winnings when he became friends with Dorice 'Dee Dee' Moore, a calculating woman who later became his financial advisor, prosecutors said yesterday.

During opening statements in Moore's first-degree murder trial in Tampa, assistant state attorney Jay Pruner said Moore swindled what was left of Shakespeare's winnings from his bank account in 2009, then killed him and buried his body under a concrete slab in her backyard.

Cops name nephew as suspect in fatal stabbing of Bronx lottery winner

Investigators believe an elderly Lottery winner stabbed to death in his Bronx home this month was killed by his nephew, and they’re asking the public’s help finding the man.

Police on Thursday named 45-year-old Idris Abdul-Muhaymin as the prime suspect in the slaying of Owen Dillard, 73, who was killed in his Mott Haven apartment June 11.

Dillard, a terminal cancer patient, recently won a $10,000 lottery payout, and was generous with his cash, relatives said.

Congrats to the breh!!!!!!

But broadcasting this in East New York :patrice:

For the most part, it's not random goons he has to worry about, it's family and friends, it's all kinds of scammers pretending to be investors, it's also himself ... to not try and give and give before realizing there isn't much more left and no more coming in.

People quit their jobs all the time. More importantly, who cares if anyone finds out. Move to any rich area in America and he has nothing to worry about anymore. Any town filled with billionaires and celebrities that's more successful than you, and buy a moderately priced property there. Them nikkas can try to run up in Greenwich, CT or Beverly Hills if they want.

Doesn't matter. Family can still get him.
Bad spending choices can still get him.

The average person playing the lottery, scratch that the majority of people playing the lottery likely don't even know what a trust is, let alone how to set up one to claim their winnings.
You're overstating the ignorance of the populace here. For instance, check out the Massachusetts lottery winners and look how many trusts claimed winnings:

That first one is from a corner store in the hood, too.

298 is a projection if you let them hold it and invest it, and give it you in increments. so it's 180 as a lump sum. then they tax the fukk outta you :yeshrug:

it wouldnt be 298 if he took it in increments, it would be like 200. personally i would take the 114 immediately and invest it myself, fukk trusting the government with that

The govt is likely to invest it in U.S. Treasury securities which is the safest bet other than straight cash

With the difference being cash depreciates with inflation over time so your 290 Million isn't worth that in 2039-49 etc

He takes the lump sum now and puts it at risk but there's no guarantee he's gonna live the 30yrs to collect the annuity

At least they pay your estate now if you die early

taking the lump sum should be based on your age
If you're young (under 30) and/or generally dumb about money then take the annuity
