When it comes to certain situations, most people don't support/oppose things based on what the legal system tells them is right but what collectively individuals find morally objectional. In fact, most times laws are simply a way to codify the moral compass of the public in general but also, laws can be wrong.

Let's say the dude was completely out of line legally. OK, the dude may go to jail. But if you ask people in general if people should have the right to use deadly force when being violently attacked, most people will agree. I mean, who cares what is legally right. People should ask themselves if someone defending themselves while being attacked should be jailed or not.
