You know what I find insane. Check this out. I been studying the Mejiji Restoration lately. Llong story short, it's how Japan was able to industrialize in less than 50 years during the 1870 to 1910 timeframe. The MAIN reason Japan industrialize is because during the Meiji Restoration there was basically free flow of information from the west (europe/america) to japan. The west gave them all the info on steam engines, rail ways etc. they gave them the game and western technicians even moved to Japan to help with the technology transfers. Now the next thing that got me thinking is why a city like Nagasaki isn't full of mixed half white half japanese gievn how many white men were out there. Come to find out that the Japanese women didn't really want to interact with the white men locals like that, in fact, most of the textile factories were filled with Japanese women basically helping their men in the industrialization process. Now compare this to Africa. Let's take the Asante for example. They esasily could have washed the money they made from gold and the salve trade in exchange for manchinery and knowhow from the euro traders in order to set up their own domestic mechanized mining industry. However they had no leverage because 1) The Asante coast was filled to the brim with Euro traders who knew everything since the local women basically threw themselves at them and just babbled 24/7 2) Due to number 1, they didnt feel like they needed to negotiate anything. It also heightened their racism as they figured they could just get one over us.
Even today China basically copied Japan's industrialization model. You can read about the meiji era industrialization and bar for bar trace it to all Chinese industrialization startegies during the 1980s to 2008.
Compare this to Africa where black women welcomed the first white sailor who hollered at the to the point where all across the coast of Africa there was a "fort" of white traders. My guess is that white boys being allowed to penetrate so deep into african lands without even needing to life a finger is part of what made them so confident on 1) Not needing to do any tech transfer in order to trade with us 2) Them eventually turning aggressive. In fact at one poine the portuguese WROTE their goal was to replace white administrators in Africa with their mixed kids.
In daughters of the trade they talk about how these forts were all up and down the coast of africa. You cant find a single thing like this in Asia pre coloniamlism era because random locals didnt just randomly invite white boys in like that. They had to consult with the elders who then gave them a few cities to trade (like Nagasaki for meiji japan).
Anyways this documentary is the coolest thing I seen in a minute. Answered a lot of the questions I've been asking myself lately:
