This is good overall but only a very small percent of Black folks are in private or home schooling. I think a bigger game changer would be community organized history classes like the Chinese have with Chinese school once a week or Jews have with Hebrew school.

My son attended Chinese class for a year before COVID (I speak Chinese and enrolled him). It was organized by the community every Friday night at a local public school with each grade in a different classroom and volunteer/part-time teachers. It would be good community building and allow control over the curriculum. Only thing is it was pricey ($400/yr) but cheaper than private school. But the cost could probably be cut in half if classes are bi-weekly.

Above the fray.
@DrBanneker

I agree, and think for the overall community, that Saturday schools are what will reemerge next. One to address the achievement gap by supplementing the core subjects, and two to bolster the self image of Black students.

This Kilombo School is great and bears a striking resemblance to the backstory of many of the schools profiled in your HBCU series. Black people making concerted effort to improve conditions and trajectory of the next generation.

Several ways to address the current academic and social realities, and glad to see the different ways that people around the country are tackling them. Agency.
