Former Super Bowl champion Dexter Manley is in hot water for making a racist joke when talking about black quarterbacks on TV Saturday.
Manley was appearing on CBS affiliate WUSA9 in DC to talk about the Redskins. He compared Washington quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Robert Griffin III, and it was when he was discussing RG3 that he made the racist crack.
“Robert as a quarterback … most of the black quarterbacks, they like running, because they’re probably used to running from the law. So I think more importantly this guy, this guy goes through his progression — he just plays well,” Manley said.
Maybe the former Washington defensive end was trying to illicit some laughs, but that joke was just in poor taste. Black quarterbacks have been working for decades to overcome stereotypes that led to them being seen as not smart enough to even play the position. It’s a shame that you have Manley making these sorts of jokes when he was a teammate of Doug Williams, who was the first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl.
