Anime wasn't really a thing in the 90s in the us. You had pockets like syndicated airings of sailor moon, dragon ball and dragon ball z, toonami, whatever aired on the scifi channel, and various vintage series that tried to hide their Japanese roots(speed racer, gigantor, robotech, astro boy and g-force.). DragonBall airing on toonami in the late 90s early 00s changed the game in the states. What was once trading bootlegs of miscellaneous shows became something mainstream and it hasn't really stopped.
This right here. When I got into anime in the mid-late 90’s it really felt like being on an island. You really had to dig to find stuff cause options were slim.
:wow:

I got out of my anime phase by around 01-02’ when I started focusing more on sports and girls so I missed the blow up. It’s a trip seeing all my kids AND their friends heavily into it.
