Did you read the entire thing? Her hair would have been in the way of the procedure so he braided her hair so it wasn’t rather than just not caring and say whatever happens to your hair is whatever happens.
Hair is very part of women’s identities.

glad I went back and read the story after your comment…cuz that was my initial sentiment as well
Awww that's so sweet. I love black doctors. I made sure all of my doctors were black, either AA or from the diaspora. They understand how to treat their own. Plus I know I won't experience bias and get the care I deserve and pay for.
ETA: Now that I think about it, I've only had two white docs and only black dentists. That excellence.
I’ve only had one white doctor my entire life…didn’t realize it til he and I had a sort of disagreement then I thought about the previous doctors I had and realized his weird ass was the first white doctor I’d been to…aside from him I’ve always seen black or asian (primarily filipino) physicians etc.
I'm sure he didn't have her looking fresh out the salon. My wife puts her hair in 6 braids every night and it takes maybe 5 -10 minutes, and she has alot of hair. He probably did it real quick while the nurses were prepping her for surgery.
