Let us take a look at this list.
1939 Hattie McDaniel - Gone with the Wind - 1st black women to win the award for her role as a house slave who is overweight and obedient unto her master. Fantastic job Hattie. Here's an Oscar for your performance as a house slave.
1990 Whoopi Goldberg - Ghost - Whoopi brought home the award for playing a lying scam artist with psychic powers. Awesome portrayal Whoopi, here's an Oscar.
2001 Halle Berry - Monsters Ball - Halle won the award for her groundbreaking performance as a poor, promiscuous, alcoholic woman. The movie is best known for her getting her back blown out on screen by a racist prison guard who oversaw the execution of her husband. Angela Bassett was offered the role 1st and she concluded : "I was not going to prostitute myself in a movie. I could not do that because its a stereotype about black women and their sexuality." The board of voters loved Halle's role so much, they awarded her the Oscar.
2006 Jennifer Hudson - DreamGirls - Ok, this one wasn't too bad. Although her character was the stereotypical angry, defensive & argumentative black woman, I feel her anger was justified. I didn't like the light skin black woman vs dark skin black woman debate the movie subliminally tried to foster and even ended up moving in favor of the light skinned woman (Beyonce) as usual.
2009 Monique - Precious - The agenda was strong with this one. Monique took home the award by playing an abusive, lazy mother who will do anything to keep getting government welfare checks. Excellent work Monique. Here's an Oscar.
2011 Octavia Spencer - The Help - Octavia plays a maid to a white woman during the 1960's, another demeaning role. Great work, here's an award.
2014 - Lupita - 12 Years as a Slave - Lupita plays a slave who gets violently beat and raped on screen by white slave masters. Masterful work. Here's an award.
Hollywood seems to love the servile, powerless negro woman in its films and it rewards them for it.
