I kind of like the idea of a longer loading time if intentionally put in game going forward. Like a penalty for death such as with each death the loading time or time before you can resume is increased via a multiplier, like 2 or 3 seconds which can be reset upon checkpoint saves. With death outside of souls games being just a slight inconvenience it really put's the severity of dying into play, Have some items that can cancel the multiplier out on death or when used to make shake it up some.
