BMW Wants To Sell Car Features On Demand

BMW is planning to move some features of its new cars to a subscription model, something it announced on Wednesday during a briefing for the press on the company's digital plans. BMW says that owners can "benefit in advance from the opportunity to try out the products for a trial period of one month, after which they can book the respective service for one or three years." The company also says that it could allow the second owner of a BMW to activate features that the original purchaser declined.

In fact, BMW has already started implementing this idea in some markets, allowing software unlocking of features like adaptive cruise control or high-beam assist (in the United States, those options are usually standard equipment). Other features are more whimsical, like having a Hans Zimmer-designed sound package for your electric BMW or adaptive suspension for your M-car. Indeed, the company says that its forthcoming iNext will "expand the opportunities for personalization."

The world is changing.

Speaking of careers at the moment i'm an on-prem guy, dealth with on-premise equipment like Data Center for a while.
Now i'm currently working on Cloud Certs like Azure
And the more I learn about, the more I think why would any company, in verticals not worrying about compliancy, buy on-prem equipment now when they can get AWS or Azure?

What you can do on Azure in minutes would take hours or sometimes days if on-premise.
And that being less costly and more elastic.

I'm mentioning this because Cloud is the future!
If you young, or even old, get some cloud certs IMMEDIATELY!!!!
Being on lockdown is the perfect time to work on certs, no excuses!
Everyday i'm studying like mad!

BMW is going subscription based because the future is subscription based, and investors prefer that forecasting.
But for customers, cloud is still better!

Soooo copying Tesla is the new norm

I'm guessing they mean more than Tesla.. Things like adjustable air suspension, sports mode, sports exhaust, wifi, HUD could all be activated / deactivated by software.

Apple CarPlay is a useless feature.
It's not. It's probably the best infotainment development in a decade plus.

As for BMW, their explanation to my team when I was at their HQ was that you are paying for BMW's continuous updating of their app unlike other manufacturers that stop support and updating right after production. Sounded like bullshyt but yeah...

It is. I can do everything I need with just my iPhone plugged up without car play. I use it for music and to take calls. I’m not paying extra for shyt I can do for free.

That’s all YOU might use it for but that’s not everyone. Saved many people thousands of dollars because it effectively replaced the in-dash navigation system. People also enjoy the ergonomics of their phone display better than the normal fare from car makers.

You tripping. Why plug your phone in and put it on a dock every time, when it can just hop on the dash the second you crank up. If you ever have to rent a vehicle, CarPlay and Android Auto instantly have you ready to roll out. They are so much more intuitive than using the built in dash plus they are free. (BMW are out of their minds charging for that). I will never own a vehicle without this feature.

Companies are moving to that because consumers have zero protection. shyt they been trying to stop people from fixing their own shyt for years. shyt John Deere was so ridiculous with it that the dumb redneck farmers had to learn how to hack their shyt and put chinese software to stop them. This is exactly what that uncle tom dead7 prefers too.
