joe still took all those fights with ali personally though one of the last things i heard joe say about ali was that he may have lost those fights with him but he won the war (speaking about all the damage he inflicted on ali) made it seem like he was proud of ali going out like that

This is true. Joe was at a book signing for his autobiography at the Viacom offices where I was working, and I asked him to sign a copy for my pops who was a big fan of his(they both were born in South Carolina and grew up in Philly). I told him how my pops always said that he was a better man than Ali, and Joe agreed. I could tell that if we had been in a less formal setting, he would have spit some real.
