Looking to go Brazil for the carnival in Rio. Anyone here been? Where's the best places to stay and go to get the best experience while there. FYI I'm going by myself but might meet up with some friends there if they end up going too
I went last year, changed my life lol. I went solo too.
Stay in Ipanema or Leblon if possible...Copacabana as a third option
i have a long post somewhere on here detailing the do’s and don’t. I’ll repost if I find it
I’ve always wanted to visit Ipanema just because I love the song Girl from Ipanema.I went last year, changed my life lol. I went solo too.

Did you manage to find it it? I couldn't
I’ll just do it again lol
If you get a hotel, be aware most of them don’t allow visitors. If they do, you’ll have to sign your guest in/out. If you get an Airbnb, you don’t need to worry about it.
Carnaval is about two weeks of celebration that gets bigger and bigger until the biggest party on the last Tuesday...on the 25th of Feb this year. There are 20+ block parties everyday all over Rio, some bigger than others. The biggest ones I went to were in Ipanema, Copacabana, and downtown. Think loud MCs rapping to Brazilian funk and girls (and guys) twerking all over streets, people selling beer, caipirinhas and weed, it’s kinda wild.
then at night there are bigger festival/rave type parties at the big arenas around the city. Major lazer headlined one last year.
also, Ipanema beach and Copacabana, moreso ipanema, is a party on the beach during carnival. Music, dancing, etc
the warnings you’ve heard about petty crime is real. Wear security wallets, don’t have your phone out in crowded areas, and don’t wear jewelry. I saw multiple phone snatching, saw a cac couple get jumped for the stuff, my friends chain got snatched, young kids running through the umbrellas snatching anything of value in sight, and I was near a police shootout...was eating at a sidewalk cafe in Ipanema with some friends , people started running, and we heard what sounded like fireworks.
with all that I love the place and am pissed I can’t go back this year.
the samba competition is a must. It’s kinda chaotic and hot but the scale of that processional is unlike anything you’d ever see.
