A former bodybuilding champion has been shot dead by two gunmen while he trained in a gym after giving away his location on Instagram.
Brazilian Eustacio Batista Dias, 27, was gunned down as he tried to escape his killers when they started firing at him while he chatted to another man between exercises. Footage from a CCTV camera at the gym in the city of Botucatu, 150 miles south-east of Sao Paulo, showed the two assassins rushing into the weights area and targeting him. One of the bullets appeared to hit a man in a blue T-shirt he had been talking to seconds earlier as he tried to get out of the way
Eustacio, the winner of a 2018 bodybuilding competition called Men’s Physique Junior and a 2019 state championship in Espiritu Santo, north of Rio de Janeiro, was killed after being cornered at the back of the gym.
His assassins appeared to fire several shots into his head and body from close range after he fell to the ground. Eustacio had been posting pictures on his Instagram page, where he was followed by nearly 11,000 fans, minutes before he was murdered yesterday afternoon. He had begun sharing videos of his training regime last April and started building up a large following.
One showed a photo of the gym which he captioned: “My Sanctuary” alongside two free weights. A police investigation is underway but neither of the two suspects is yet said to have been identified. It was not immediately clear today why the gunmen had targeted their victim.
Detectives have confirmed the authenticity of the video footage published on social media and on Brazilian newspaper websites. One unconfirmed local report said the assassins may have been able to confirm their victim's whereabouts through photos and a video he posted as Instagram Stories shortly before being executed showing he was weight-training.
Eustacio had recently starting exercising again after a month lay-off when he said that psychologically he was not right. The other man who appeared to have been hit by a bullet is understood to have been injured but not critically. Eustacio previously had stints in the penitentiary system in Teixeira de Freitas, said police official Lourenço Talamonte, from the Botucatu Section, and he was arrested in 2021 for carrying drugs.
