The Brazilian federal judge Sérgio Moro, a crusading anti-corruption judge, has accepted an offer from the far-right president-elect Jair Bolsonaro to lead the justice ministry, drawn by the chance to implement a broad agenda to combat graft and organised crime.

Moro, who led the so-called “Operation Car Wash” investigation resulting in a 12-year bribery sentence for the former leftist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said he would hand over the reins of that sprawling investigation to other judges to avoid controversy.

The appointment will likely be hailed by many Brazilians who want to see a crackdown on corruption. But it will also likely add to political polarization: many accuse Moro of going after left-leaning politicians.

The man laughed and dedicated his impeachment vote to the men who tortured Lula when he was a political prisoner during the junta. :francis:

Expect to see a lot of opposition members disappear, and quickly.

Is lula actually guilty?

Beyond a reasonable doubt? Nah. He didn’t even get a jury trial It’s a political hit job that worked to perfection. Lula was going to beat Bolsonaro even if he ran from a jail cell.

Lot of ambiguous stuff with the “proof” against him. He also doesn’t legally own the presents that the prosecutors say he got such as the apartment/condo.

It’s Brazil. So he’s had to do deals when he governed but everyone has to. The Congress has 40 parties and like most of the Congress is under investigation for corruption. Plus the current President Temer also has way more concrete corruption on his tab.

It was always a right wing ploy that backfired when their approval numbers tanked even below PT's post scandal. But this just leads to an opening for a demagogue to take control and re-institute the junta which is coming within the next 6 months. The Brazilian right made their bed, now they can lie in it as their are brought in for "reeducation" like everybody else.
