SCOOP / UPDATE — Disney saw more than 1.7 million total paid streaming cancelations during the period 9/17-9/23, a Disney source confirms to me. The total includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN.
Kimmel reinstatement preempted Disney+ price increase
[QUOTED POST]

@marisakabas.bsky.social
NEW — I wrote about my confirmed scoop from last night that Disney hastened Kimmel's return because of a planned Disney+ streaming price increase announcement coming on Tuesday:

The number of cancelations Disney saw in the week after suspending Kimmel was 436% above baseline subscriber churn.

Damn. I wish Spotify had seen this number of cancellations after everyone found out they paid Joe Rogan like 500 million dollars.

I didn't even KNOW this. Jeeze Louise. I don't use spotify but damn that's a fukkin BS move on their part.

ignominious.bsky.social
There was a light scuffle about it. I recall Joni Mitchell pulled her song collection off Spotify at the time. I think the conclusion for Spotify users was white dude using the n-word and bashing public health wasn’t as annoying as rebuilding their playlists elsewhere.

I cancelled, switching to Tidal. We never went back and have no regrets.

I've had Tidal for years, no complaints! It's a pretty good service. I get my podcasts on Podcast addict.

I'm not going back. Maybe the next company will think twice before bending the knee.
We've canceled everything at this point and are only shopping for necessities.
We can force Wall st to pay attention.

If only the NYTimes got that sorta treatment

Any survey on cancelations of WAPO and Amazon?
19/52
gentlecrocodile.bsky.social
The cheapest Disney+ subscription cost $120/year, so that's about $200 million of lost annual revenue. Oopsies!

stephielynn204.bsky.social
Holy cow!! That's fantastic. We really can make changes if we keep boycotting. Let's hold these companies to account for bending a knee to a tyrant.

“Disney lost close to $5 billion in market value due to subscriber concerns following the temporary suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live and subsequent calls for cancellations.”

Will instead be spending any $ that would have gone to Disney+ & Hulu on Public Broadcasting from now on.
23/52
jwmcartist.bsky.social
Did they learn anything? Probably not.

methodnull.bsky.social
Dropped and was going to reevaluate but with price increase...just going to move on... honestly I don't even pay much attention to price increases but they hit me with an issue I do care about, so yea bad timing for them

Same. Plus turns out YouTube tv has good sports!

I am so happy to say that I was part of this. I am so happy that I made someone at Disney’s day just a little bit worse because of their awful decision.

Libs need to flex their market power like this every fukking time.
Do it to the New York Times, The Washington Post, Apple (stop upgrading your iPhone, for example)…

At least capitalism is predictable.

Disney has nothing I want.
30/52

And the fools had to follow up with a notice raising their prices.
31/52
jquasi.bsky.social
It still boggles my mind why they didn’t try to fight the government in a legal battle. That could have been cheaper, and they would have won.

Not going back

I don't know if you saw this or not. I get Disney+ through a legacy Verizon plan, so no easy way to cancel. But they sent me this email announcing the new "price savings" I'm getting.
34/52
norattack.bsky.social
Lol I was going to consider resubscribing when Kimmel returned but then that price increase was too much so we’re just done with it all at this point. Bloodsuckers

It’s amazing what we can accomplish as a united front!
Just awesome!

noahdahl.bsky.social
Until Disney acknowledges and comes clean about the pressure put on them by this administration, there's no reason to change course.
We've cancelled and will stay that way until we see some small measure of courage in the C-Suite set.

I was thinking about subscribing back after they got Kimmel back, but then they sent me the price increase notice on top of all this? Are you kidding?! I have not resubscribed.

So something like $300 million/year in lost revenue.

And I was one of those cancellations...

rjejr.bsky.social
Decent sized number, I'm impressed.
I know a lot of people won't come back, and that price increase looks really bad under the circumstances, but I do think Disney was smart in very loudly advertising "The price goes up Oct 21" to get people to sign up before then.

Oh phooey. Streaming was a good thing, in its pioneer days. Now it’s just being pulled back to cable prices and restrictions.
43/52
rjejr.bsky.social
Yeah it's just the new cable now. Soon all cable TV will be over the internet and we'll be paying an extra $30/m to have no ads in our $150 live streaming service that's full of ads.
44/52
pengwennnotes.bsky.social
Yeah. That’s why I started buying DVDs again. I was so excited about streaming, 15 years ago.
45/52
rjejr.bsky.social
Skip buying, find a local library. Mine has a small Blu ray section but an extremely large DVD section. It's basically the entire 2nd floor. Also a lot of video games which saves me a lot of money as well.

Can anyone confirm park attendance went down bad, too?
Saw something suggesting it, but I don't trust these things without context analysis. e.g. time of day, day of week, and seasonal trends.
