I can't really recall a racist scandal ever preventing a white candidate from getting the same votes as they would've before, I don't even know what the point is anymore, it has the opposite effect. Non-white people believe it's true character finally being exposed whereas white people see it as a peachy useful narrative of redemption and maturity.
That being said, the dilemma of conservatives is remarkable here, because even though they spend the other 364 days calling this man a "c*ck" "s*yboy" "limp-wrist" and every other snarl word they've created, they still instinctually work against themselves and leap to his defense because they have such a calcified belief in shielding people from a perceived "overly sensitive" society.
