When the last time a player retires from the game and gets a head coaching Job a week later?

:patrice:

It used to happen a lot in the 60s. At least something very similar...

I think Bill Russel did it..

I think Dave Cowens was a player-coach too. But I think he quit coaching to play again.

Not sure if Bill retired completely from playing before he coached tho.

He might have resumed his playing career too. Not sure

Coaching in the NBA was never about x and o

It's about having the best players play at their best.

You can draw up all the Xs and Os you want. The great players are going to do what ever the fukk they want to do.

All coaches do is control timeouts

Phil said in his first book Kobe broke off plays all the time.

Did he ever bench him for someone that would run the plays that are called?

Whole lot of truth in this. Cats that just started watching sports might not get it ...

I don't know how much knowledge he has as a player that can transfer to be a 'successful' coach.
I'm not saying he doesn't know how to coach. I think there are certain things that coaches, whether it is high school, college, or pro, learn that are not gained from being a player.
I don't think he can walk into any dead NCAA Div I men's basketball program and turn them around in four years to get into the Final Four. He's not a Jim Boeheim, Bob Knight, Shaka Smart, or Andy Enfield.

Maybe he might do a great job. I can't say for certain. Good luck.
