Kaepernick says he has received death threats

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Colin Kaepernicksays he has received death threats through social media and other avenues since he began to protest during the national anthem last month.

Kaepernick said Tuesday he has not alerted San Francisco 49ers team security about the threats and that he understood he might be threatened once he began his protest over racial oppression and police brutality in the United States.

"To me, if something like that were going to happen, you've proved my point," he said. "It would be loud and clear for everyone why it happened. That would move this movement forward at a greater speed than what it is even now. Granted, I don't want that to happen. But that's the realization of what could happen."

Kaepernick's protest during the anthem became public in August when he sat during the anthem before a preseason game against Green Bay and later explained his reasoning. He has since kneeled before the Niners' past three games. The kneeling is meant to show more respect for veterans.

Kaepernick has been joined by several other NFL players, U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe and scores of high school and college players.

It has not received universal support, however, and he said he was the target of racial slurs and other insults before the game Sunday at Carolina.

"There's a lot of racism in this country disguised as patriotism and people want to take everything back to the flag but that's not what we're talking about," he said. "We're talking about racial discrimination, inequalities and injustices that happen across the nation."

Kaepernick spoke to one of those cases Tuesday, the shooting of an unarmed black man in Tulsa, Oklahoma, last week. Police video shows 40-year-old Terence Crutcher walking away from the officers and toward his SUV on Friday with his hands in the air. He then approaches the driver's side of his vehicle, where an officer shocks him with a stun gun and another fatally shoots him.

Officers had been called to the scene to respond to a report of a stalled vehicle.

The officer who shot Crutcher, Betty Shelby, was placed on paid leave.

"His car was broken down, he was looking for help and he got murdered," Kaepernick said. "That's a perfect example of what this is about. I think it will be very telling what happens with the officers that killed him because everybody's eyes will be on this."

Kaepernick also gave more details about his plans to donate $1 million to organizations supporting his cause of racial equality. He said he has people currently vetting potential charities to determine the proper ones to donate to and will launch a website detailing his donations and how the money is spent.

He plans to give away $100,000 a month for the next 10 months.

"I want to make sure that not only am I transparent about what I'm doing but these organizations are transparent about where the money is going as well," he said.

Here is my thing. The national anthem is another form of "patriotism" and nationalism to some degree. I don't find patriotism at least on its face wrong. If I'm Nigerian for example and proud of Nigeria, I don't necessarily view it as a bad thing. I use that example to remove the idea from the toxic nature of the debate in the us.

However, a major part of our supposed ideals is that you have the right of free speech and protesting the government. These people reacting to Kaep are so viciously angry and threatening summary execution because someone made a decision to not stand during the anthem. Dudes don't believe in the supposed ideals of free speech and right to protest. They're fukking fascist. you're free to disagree with what he is doing but these people are fascists and are past just simple disagreement.

These people will tell you it's disrespecting the troops and all that shyt. Nah you can easily interpret the anthem as a way to show pride in your government and nation. If your nation or government is fukking you over then according to the supposedly ideals of this country, the national anthem is something to protest.

I know these people are just hateful and I'm giving them too much credit by giving a more educated rational but this has been on my mind for a bit.

Is anyone surprised? Super patriotic white people are normally racist. And on top of that kaep is really smart so thats another negative against kaep. Maybe we dont see it now but i feel like kaep is making history.

Thing is that this country took in a lot of former government or science officials from nazi Germany after the war and before the war, I think it was either the associated press was working with them to push their propaganda here or the AP reported that we were pushing their propaganda here in likely a subtle manner. This sort of hate being pushed as "actual patriotism" is a form of brainwashing. It's absolutely fascism to try and lash out against someone for using their free speech to talk about the injustices in this country. This country has done such a good job of conditioning the people to hate what actual freedom means that the people are more or less doing the work themselves of trying to make this a place like North Korea where people are required to stand and carry pictures of government leaders on their mantle at home. It's insanity that these people don't see it.
