He's the adult version of the child from an alternate universe. He offers to help raise him and tells him he's a lost cousin. Their dynamic is infectious and everyone likes seeing them getting along.
Eventually he will have to sacrifice himself to protect wakanda or earth by the time the younger t'chala is a young adult. On his death bed he tells him the truth and uses a form of magic to transfer his memories to the young t'chala, telling him to live on for the both of them.
The key thing is that the actor has to be likeable and they have to have good chemistry like they're actually close friends in real life. That way when he passes, the audience feels the loss more deeply and empathize with the character.
