I think it is more a case of the game adapting.
It is very easy for people who don't hold any authority in a company to use the lgbt as leverage when it comes to getting their own way.
Think something like that happened on some other netflix show. A directors name was dragged through the mud until it was discovered that the complaint boiled down to not taking her opinion on board for some same sex subplot.
I think they've realised that pandering to certain people opened a can of worms. The fact that low level employees tried storming a senior meeting is vindication.

beyond that dave doesn't just insult people he has tough conversations people can't have and raises valid points. not having thick enough skin to take criticism isn't a reason enough to cancel him. he's not just telling offensive jokes, he's dissecting society and from that approach it becomes hard to just use fake outrage to force peoples hands.
Last year he got the Mark Twain award for story telling or something. Twain who loved nikka more than Tarantino, still held in high regard in American literature and culture. Yet Dave should be censored? Nah i don't think so.

Even then, it still comes down to money. If the Netflix special was a flop, then Netflix would have had no problem with throwing him under the bus. This literally just a business move and then going to bat for their investment.
They aren't just doing this for any comedian that has a special on their Netflix. I highly doubt that they'll have the same consistency the next time a different comedian pulls what Dave just did.
