:jbhmm: Abiy :jbhmm:

Will Ethiopia and Eritrea finally restore peaceful relations?

The rug has been pulled from under the Eritreans feet it seems. The only thing defining the dictatorships existence may have vanished overnight.

The State of Emergency also ended and they are also liberalizing state control over some major sectors. Major things are happening in Ethiopia.

:ohhh: This new PM Ahmed. I need some explanation behind his moves. He's trying to appease everyone. Watch for Egyptian appeasement next!

Wow, that’s huge. The ball is in Asmara’s court now. At this point it feels like we might end up with the two nations/one people approach that some of the Eritrean elders been preaching for in the diaspora.

We could never be one nation again, Selassie and everyone afterwards completely fukked that up but it’s no reason why our governments should still be at odds.

way overdue. both countries are on the up in my opinion. don't get it twisted, afwerki is loved by the majority of eritreans.

100% facts.

Yeah, I’ll never fully understand it but I guess for some Eritrean identity and independence is tied to Isaias. It’s like to be critical of him or to want something different for the country is to be against Eritrea.

We’re definitely a family, only the most extremist viewpoints don’t think that. But I still feel like Eritrea and Eritreans have much to solve amongst themselves before a full and complete peace can happen with Ethiopia.

Hell I’ll be honest, I don’t even believe this headline fo real cuz as the OP said it takes away the rallying cry for the Afewerki regime by ending the border dispute that has kept them isolated and militarized for so long.

So with this done, is anyone expecting Ethiopia and Eritrea to be one country? Two countries to have the same relationship as the US and the UK? Or just two countries with non-antagonizing diplomatic associations?

They believe any type of instability regarding the regime opens the door to an invasion. The paranoia is understandable considering Ethiopia is on Ertirean land and Ethiopia has grown in power and influence around the world. Let's be real if Ethiopia wanted Massawa back they probably could take it and very few in the international community would speak up about it.

Also I think a lot of older Eritreans fukk with him because of his background with the EPLF and they respect his views on self-reliance. There's a big Eritrean population in Dallas, most of them view him as a hero who lives modestly compared to other presidents and someone, despite his strong hand towards the media and other imperfections, has the betterment of his people as his main goal.

That would be amazing but at best we’ll probably have stronger economic ties. It’s been over 25 years since we were one country and at this point too much has happened. Never say never, but I’m thinking realistically it’s going to be mutual cooperation and support from both sides. In a way, we are nominally one country in terms of culture, people, and history so moving forward we should be on one accord.
