Did you hear about Teddy Afro causing some controversy?

Nah, I just watched his impromptu performance at millennium hall. If there’s any controversy it’s singing a song without fixing them vocals first lmao.

He sung a nice Eritrean themed song. From what my Mom told me “Dahlak” would’ve been a better song since it talks specifically about raising new generations on both sides not to hate each other.

It’s funny, after all this bullshyt we’re roughly right back where we started after the Italians left. The only difference is Eritrea fully administers itself. This whole situation is fascinating, I’m at a loss for words honestly.

Edit: btw we really need a Horn of Africa/East Africa geopolitics thread. @thatknickfan @FAH1223 I especially love hearing from my waryaas yall wallahis smart as fukk.

It's cool to see that they didn't appropriate the property and loot shyt
They aint have to loot the embassy since these Tegaru nikkas just looted all the properties and companies of eritreans after they deported them all in 98 :hhh:. If you know your history you already know the eritreans in Addis used to be bossed up and was the most successful business community. Nikkas literally became rich overnight just moving into empty houses and shyt. Both my parents grew up in Addis. Some of my relatives got deported, some are still in Addis.

I read on twitter a lot of Eritreans were upset he was praising Haile Selassie in front of Afwerki. Hacchalu brought up some ethnic shyt that pissed off some non-Oromos. I don't think it was a big deal but I saw a lot of people on twitter discussing them.

Interesting, I listened to Teddy speak but my Amharic isn’t good enough for me to have caught that. That wouldn’t surprise me though and if it’s true that’s bad wherewithal to bring him up.

One thing that I think and I hope will happen is Ethiopians will begin to reassess who our heroes are or what their faults were. For all that Selassie represents he wasn’t at all a perfect leader and we have to acknowledge why groups in this country (and formerly of this country in Eritrea’s case) have felt marginalized and mistreated.

Eritreans lowkey had more advantage than most in Ethiopia. From what all my older relatives told me, Selassie really wanted to show Eritrea more love since they were the lost brethren that had suffered the colonial experience so he built more shyt there than in other parts of the country and places Eritreans in positions of influence. Wonder how that worked out with the accusations of killings by his regime as well.

Another thing I’ll say is that I totally hate that there were deportations but the flip side was Eritreans that were neighbors and friends with people for years suddenly switched up and shunned their community and left for Eritrea which left many ETs with bitter feelings. All I’m saying is that shyt is complicated on both sides and we both can be sure as shyt that the Ethiopians that were deported from Eritrea had their properties seized as well.

On the whole, I’ve known many Eritreans that were extremely successful in Ethiopia prior to independence. Some families here in DC are legit rich out here just by bringing that same great business sense to America. In a weird way, some of them rich Eris are that silent minority that merely acknowledge they are Eritrean but speak Amharic and fully identify as Ethiopian.

That's interesting. I think I read somewhere it was the other way around and Selassie took most of the Italian built businesses to Ethiopia which kinda halted the economy, making some eritreans move to Addis. But you probably know more about this than me

DP world soon coming to Assab
Ethiopia just announced they are building a naval force. Will they dock it in Assab? Why does a land locked country need a navy?
Ethiopia to use Assab with terms unknown to the public
Ethiopian government to buy 20% of eritrean airlines. Merely a symbolic gesture since eritrean airlines not really worth shyt. They got like 1 plane :snoop:

I'm not sure im comfortable with the pace that all this is happening. Feels like it was all planned behind the scenes for a long time. Where are all these PFDJ minions who love to scream "eritrea not for sale" or whatever.. These people are just zombies going with the flow trying to come up with explanations for whatever Isaias does. Eritrea has no transparency. Been no official government statements throughout this whole ordeal.

They just released some religious prisoners which is good. And Eritrea might be pulling back its troops from the border, dont know if it is confirmed but a lot of sources reporting it.

I had just started reading Octavia Butler when this happened so I had to put that down and pick up one of my ET/Eri books that I hadn’t read yet. For me, I want to know what actually happened. My family is from Addis so what they tell me is that during Selassie’s time they had no idea there was even a rebellion going on in Eritrea. So for all I know, Selassie’s regime might’ve done just that.

However my understanding was that the British destroyed some of the factory infrastructure created by the Italians and Selassie had to invest more into Eritrea than other parts of the country in order to restore things.

All in all though, I can’t imagine there’s an issue that was worse handled by a leader and his successors than Ethiopia and Eritrea. I’m in agreement with some of the Eritrean elder intellectuals when they say this shyt should’ve never happened to begin with had Selassie not being so inept of a leader.

Yeah this is the part that has me most fascinated. Both sides have been antagonistic and suspicious of one another for two decades, maybe longer, how can everything just suddenly move at such a fast rate. Granted, Ethiopia is forever obsessed with sea access but having a navy makes no sense as long as we don’t have any natural coastline of our own.

The future developments for our countries if nothing else will mark tremendous shifts from where we’ve been all these years. I’m just hoping it’s for the better.

not a lot of transparency for sure

:patrice:

In terms of? :patrice2:

Edit: my bad I guess you were responding to @JDH comment about lack of transparency. Yeah, I’m hungry to know more but it’s only gonna come in trickles given the nature of Eritrea’s regime.

I just had this thought. Given that we’re reaching an era of peace on both sides. The point has been brought up that the repressive nature of Eritrea’s regime can no long hold up given the lack of an Ethiopian boogeyman.

With that said, I’ve met quite a few Eritreans that absolutely hate Isaias as well as those that love him. If the country doesn’t begin to reform and implement a constitution and the right to vote could this cause a split between Eritreans deep enough that civil war could break out in the same fashion as Syria?

Granted, Eritrea and Syria’s histories are vastly different so I don’t mean to make a direct comparison. But rather how the whole thing came about with a young population protesting for changes and a traditionally authoritarian regime responds with force. It’s a fearful thought and I pray that it never ever happens but I can’t help but wonder what potential Pandora’s box might’ve been opened with all this reconciliation.

I dont know what book its from, (Its not my pic :hubie:) but this is more in line with what I have heard from people. Both ethios and eris

And yeah the whole independence movement was handled pretty bad imo. All the killing and raping of civilians and destroying villages only led to eritreans starting to support the independence fighters more and more and made more eritreans want to join. Ethiopian troops was on some wild shyt, this is far from all of it :picard:

My homies dad watched his whole fam get killed by the ethiopian army as a baby while they had hid him in the closet.

But i think the massacres got more frequent under Mengistu. Like I said obviously this made more and more people wish for an independent Eritrea. Who knows how the referendum would have turned out if they had it in 1961 when Hamid Idris Awate fired the first shot?
