"Two of Gallup's long-term indicators of voter turnout show that Americans are much less interested in the midterm election today than they were on the eve of the election in 2010. Moreover, the 41% of U.S. adults saying they have given "quite a lot" or "some" thought to this year's election is the lowest Gallup has recorded on the eve of any of the last six midterms. The 58% saying they are absolutely certain they will vote ties with 1998 for the lowest.

Additionally, after two midterm elections with above-average voter enthusiasm, the percentage of Americans saying they feel less enthusiastic than usual about voting this year (48%) now exceeds the percentage who say they are more enthusiastic (40%). This is similar to the pattern seen in each midterm from 1994 through 2002.

The clearest indication that turnout will be lower than four years ago is that more than a quarter of U.S. adults -- 27% -- say they do not plan to vote in this year's election, up from 20% in 2010. This does not mean that all others will in fact vote, but it is a useful metric to gauge relative turnout across elections."*

REAKING: President Obama Wants To Propose 'Mandatory Voting.' It would change everything.

Mandatory voting? Obama says it would be 'transformative

WASHINGTON (AP) — They say the only two things that are certain in life are death and taxes. President Barack Obama wants to add one more: voting.

Obama floated the idea of mandatory voting in the U.S. while speaking to a civic group in Cleveland on Wednesday. Asked about the corrosive influence of money in U.S. elections, Obama digressed into the related topic of voting rights and said the U.S. should be making it easier — not harder— for people to vote.

Just ask Australia, where citizens have no choice but to vote, the president said.

"If everybody voted, then it would completely change the political map in this country," Obama said, calling it potentially transformative. Not only that, Obama said, but universal voting would "counteract money more than anything."

Its not a bad idea..... I think he's trying to get the majority of the public invested in the election process.... If its mandatory, you'll be more than likely to research your options.....

Most people don't vote because they are lazy and not interested, not because they believe it doesn't make a difference...

Essentially that's the plan. By forcing people to vote you can't complaint about the BS laws since the population were the ones that put them those responsible in office. I think it's a good idea since the president can't pass local laws, most people only vote in presidential elections anyway .

Did yall even read the article. You guys are acting like hes trying to pass a law...

First of all, his point is if more people voted, than the election process and the money involved would be more regulated.Politicians would more likely represent the people that voted for them and not the highest bidder.

Stop crying about being forced to do shyt, aint nobody making you do anything. :heh:

Plus Obama is out in less than a year. He's not proposing anything.

If they want more people voting, they need to make election week. People are very busy during the week and extending the window might improve turnout
