So When did this "WAR ON HIP HOP LYRICS" began and who's really to blame? Hip Hop has never been fully understood by White America but Lyrics were never an issue. Before they just called it a Fad and hope it would disappear. But things changed in the late 80's when Hip Hop Lyrics went from PG to R-rated. Here are 5 things that cause Rick Ross to lose his Reebok contract 20 years later:
*N.W.A. "fukk the Police". When this song dropped it was like a nuke bomb. Police were condemning it, Politicans were getting involved. The F.B.I. even went after the record label cause of the song. It was crazy but it brought a lot of attention to rap Lyrics.
*2 Live Crew albums goes to court - Uncle Luke and 2 Live Crew's "As Nasty as I wanna be" became the 1st album ruled by a court to be Obscene due to it's sexual lyrical content. It even went all the way to the supreme court of Flordia before they were aquited of all charges.
*2 Live Crew follow up album makes history - Their next album "Banned in the U.S.A." became the 1st album to have the parental advisory label.
*Ice T "Cop Killer" - N.W.A. "Said F*ck the Police" but Ice T took it a step futher claiming to be a "Cop Killer". The song cause a huge fire storm that President Bush and Vice President Dan Quayle as well as Tipper Gore and the F.B.I. Got involved.
*2 Pac debut album makes a splash - After lackluster reviews and sales from his debut 2 Pac found himself in the middle of a firestorm when Vice President Dan Quayle made an issue about his lyrics. As everyone knows, Tupac was heavily socially conscious and political on his debut album. Due to some lyrical content that a Guy who shot a Texas office said influenced him, Pac album made it the white house. Vice President Dan Quayle stated that "An album like this doesn't belong in society". Tupac even found himself in a war with outspoken advocate Deloris C Tucker for his lyrics.
So there you have it folks. Blame N.W.A., 2 Live Crew, Ice T and Tupac as they are the ones who's lyrics started the War On Hip Hop Lyricism that lost Rick Ross his Reebok contract. Got Eminem and Biggie Censored on their LP's. Got Luda fired from his Pepsi Deal after Bill O'really made a fuss about lyrics. The bottom line is this is a war that is on going and will continue as long as Artist talk about real things that happen in real life. As horrible as Ricky's line was, there are dudes that drug women and rape them.
