Maybe now American STEM graduates will be able to get jobs. I've worked in tech for over a decade. And would much rather work with someone straight out of college over an H1B anyday. The Government should slap higher fees on all these employment visas.
:obama:
Yea I've been in pharma for 10+ years and have seen Indians completely taking over. We need to invest in Americans and stop letting in excess labor to compete against us.

"No hospital will pay a $100k fee for a $55k resident salary."

i thought immigration does not affect wages ... according to some

:hubie:

The issue is more about employer costs and if hospitals can afford to sponsor residents with this new fee. It’s not just about wages but the total financial burden on hospitals. So even if immigration does not directly depress wages, this 100k will seriously raise hiring costs, which affects if these hospitals can afford to keep sponsoring these doctors.

This will force hospitals to stop hiring international medical graduates, making doctor shortage worse, especially in underserved areas.

There’s rural areas where there are few doctors or clinics nearby and people often have to travel long distances for care because American doctors don’t wanna live there.

Also places with high poverty, elderly populations, or other vulnerable groups also are where there’s obstacles to get care and again American doctors don’t wanna work there.

"US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that will add a $100,000 (£74,000) annual fee for applicants to the H-1B visa programme for skilled foreign workers.

Trump's order mentions "abuse" of the programme and will restrict entry unless payment is made.

Critics have long argued that H-1Bs undercut the American workforce, while supporters - including billionaire Elon Musk - argue it allows the US to attract top talent from around the world.

In another order, Trump set up a new "gold card" to fast-track visas for certain immigrants in exchange for fees starting at £1m.

Trump's order is due to come into force on 21 September. It would only apply to new requests, but companies would have to pay the same amount for each applicant for six years, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said.

India was the largest beneficiary of H-1B visas last year, accounting for 71% of approved applications, Reuters news agency reports, citing government data.

China was said to come in second at 11.7%.

Tahmina Watson, a founding attorney at Watson Immigration Law, told the BBC that the ruling could be a "nail in the coffin" for many of her clients that are mostly small businesses and start-ups.

"Almost everyone's going to be priced out. This $100,000 as an entry point is going to have a devastating impact," she added, noting that many small or medium-sized companies "will tell you they actually can't find workers to do the job".

"When employers sponsor foreign talent, more often than not, they're doing that because they have not been able to fulfil those positions," Ms Watson added.

Jorge Lopez, the chair of the immigration and global mobility practice group at Littler Mendelson PC, said a $100,000 fee "will put the brakes on American competitiveness in the tech sector and all industries"."

And yet he already okayed 600k Chinese students to come to college here. And then they passed a law to bring even more h1bs here to do work last week

Americans need to invest too.
There is strong demand for skilled talent in the U.S. pharmaceutical industry but there’s a shortage of it.

People complaining about jobs Americans aren’t going for.

About 80% of pharmaceutical manufacturers report a skills mismatch.

The industry is expected to face millions of vacancies as demand grows.

is 55K the standard salary. it looks a bit low.

if the salaries on offer are attractive for the skill levels then what's the issue.

that should soak up the circa 7% of IT grads who cannot find jobs.

point being that locals with those skills will demand more.

that is wage suppression.

meanwhile unemployment grows. job insecurity grows.

I have no clue how new college graduates stay employed longer than 5 to 6 years in this country. Odds are you won't make it to 10 years before getting laid off. Who can afford to keep changing careers every time companies want to import 3rd world citizens?

This will greatly impact higher education research

There are not enough highly skilled workers and H1B's helped close that gap

We're not talking regular jobs, but specialized jobs in STEM fields

The right don't even want ppl to go to college

Craziness
They are also cutting research funding so there are less jobs in the first place

No problem with giving money away to other countries but as soon as reparations come up, it’s we should pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and stop being victims.
