US, UK, Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states want a pipeline through Syria. Russia needs access to a warm water port which they have in Syria, Iran needs Syria to be upright in support of Hezbollah/Lebanon and to serve as a buffer against Israel and Saudi Arabia. There's a lot of other issues central to Syria..which ever side Syria falls to would be a major victory and would allow regional hegemony.
