A team at Washington State University is working to develop a breath test that could quickly determine whether a driver is under the influence of marijuana. Law enforcement officers already use preliminary breath tests in the field to estimate drivers' blood alcohol content. But no similar portable tool exists to test for marijuana impairment ... Stoned drivers have become an increasing concern since Washington voters legalized recreational use of marijuana ... A quarter of blood samples taken from drivers in 2013, the first full year the initiative was in effect, came back positive for pot. ... officers and prosecutors rely on blood tests to determine how much active THC is present in a driver's blood. Those test results aren't immediately available to patrol officers who suspect someone is driving high." Also reported: "Under Washington's legal marijuana law, those who get caught driving with a blood content of at least 5 nanograms of active THC per milliliter are subject to an automatic driver's license suspension of 90 days or more."

would only work if they smoked weed. i can't imagine this would would for someone who has had an edible

either way the only way to determine blood content is with a blood test

but if you're shown to be under the influence CURRENTLY then you won't have a problem.

I don't see how this is any different from breathalyzers.
this test can't show how recently you smoked or how high you actually are. I could smoke some trash weed, barely be high and test positive for this test even though I'm not even high. Marijuana does not impair you in the same fashion that alcohol does, or for as long. Alcohol impairs you for hours upon hours, it's a central nervous system depressant, it greatly impairs motor skills, marijuana just doesn't work in the same fashion. You can't equate the two and say driving drunk and driving stoned is the same thing, it just isn't. Why do we need this test? Why don't they put you through the same impairment tests like they do when they suspect a drunk driver? Like walking heel-to-toe in a straight line etc? Because most people who are stoned can easily pass sobriety tests, because like I said marijuana doesn't affect motor skills the same was alcohol does...

I know all of this, but if you're driving impaired then you're driving impaired.

Theres an entire system that will be implemented to ensure safety on the road. I don't think anyone is expecting cops to use alcohol screens on weed users.

stop with this black and white shyt, "if you're impaired you're impaired!" should we start testing drivers for being tired? Being tired and driving is WAY more impairment then driving stoned. The different sobriety tests they use for suspected drunk drivers is to determine whether they are impaired. What is wrong with using those tests for suspected DWI suspects? Oh yeah, because marijuana doesn't really impair you to any great degree enough to fail those sobriety tests. So now we're going to test your breath for whether you've smoked in the past 5 hours? I'm not even fukkin stoned anymore and I could get arrested, how does that make sense or lead to safer roads?

Marijuana DOES impair you. Numerous field tests have shown this to be true.

If the question is adjusting the test so that it compares something like the half-life or the intensity of weed presence and how to do that, then we can discuss that.

But saying there should be NO test for it is downright insanity.

Not "everything" just goes free and without consequence out here.
