even crazy people are habit forming and they tend to inhabit the same place/area if not forced to move so if you provide them a home, they will return to it.

The Danish Approach to Beating Homelessness

snippet:
Another system that follows the “housing first” idea is called the “Freak Housing for Freak People” (“ Homelessness in Denmark”). Since the term “freak” has a negative connotation, it is also known as “Unusual Housing for Unusual Lifestyles” (4). This is a method that provides housing that caters to the needs of homeless individuals who find it challenging to adapt to the mainstream homeless services (“Homelessness in Denmark” 4). The process includes providing housing first to the homeless person and then eventually other services, such as mental health treatment, when the individual reaches stability (“Homelessness in Denmark” 4). One of the main goals of the “Unusual Housing for Unusual Lifestyles” system is to narrow the target population (“Homelessness in Denmark” 5). Narrowing the target population allows the system to help the individuals more closely. By having a smaller group of people with very similar issues or situations, it becomes easier for people such as social workers to provide help. Danish service provides specialized support for people who are without shelter completely, and also for people who have failed to integrate into conventional homeless shelters (“Homelessness in Denmark” 5). The main objective of the method is to improve the quality of the individual’s life, and thus reintegration into the community is a last priority (“Homelessness in Denmark” 5). Since housing is a basic need and gives the person a sense of stability and security (“Homelessness in Denmark” 5), this is the single most important priority for helping the homeless. It is clear that providing housing first to the homeless individual is a strategy that is implemented in many different areas of the social services process in Denmark, and has also been successful in lowering the rates of homelessness to the small number of 0.1 percent.

--

Along with unsuccessful evaluations in the United States, the process of deinstitutionalization in the 1950’s also resulted in more people living on the street (Marksos and Lima 2). The process of deinstitutionalization involved the elimination of mental institutions, which then led to an increase of people living the street. Denmark, in comparison, worked on improving mental institutions (Hansen 115), which resulted in a lower rate of homelessness (Benjaminsen and Dyb 49). The contrast is clear. The United States has developed methods that have been unsuccessful in lowering the rate of homelessness, whereas Denmark has not only created their own effective approaches but has also executed these strategies successfully.

The city has constantly met the requests of CATS for security services including hiring private armed security whose purpose is to prevent these issues.

Armed passenger with no ticket.

As far as him being a repeat offender, he’s been convicted and served his sentences.

Bad things happen. He’ll be convicted

If dude is doing this right after being released, how exactly were they treating him?
how do you treat someone that doesnt want to be treated?

you see what im getting at?

if someone is crazy enough to kill someone why are you assuming the answer is to offer them help and they will do whats needed to get better?
if that was the case they wouldnt be crazy

they still have homeless people in Denmark.

this is like if someone in America did a peace on homeless shelters...
or programs that gave people vouchers for homes.

If someone is out of their mind giving them a home isnt going to do anything.

Europe isnt some magical place...
ive traveled enough to know that

:what:

there are way more crazy people living in homes in america than on the street, in shelters or couch surfing.

edit:

those are interesting anecdotes in the reddit thread but the broader data shows, they've lowered homelessness more effectively than the united states where it is growing.

RIP to the victim. With all of the contact the killer had with the system, he should have been diagnosed and held until his problems were manageable.

Held him with what real mental health care in the states is a fukkin joke. Sadly this breh is not an outlier, there are many homeless outchea in Texas legitimately arguing with theirselves that I’ve lost count.

Reagan literally set mental health care back by a generation and we will probably never recover.

people in this country do more drugs.

we have a completely different culture than Denmark.
the majority of homeless people have mental health or drug related problems.

the truth is there is no clean cut answer to all this.

folks can blame who they want but they themselves dont want to deal with the crazy folks in their own family

:what:

people been homeless in america long before the war on drugs.

drugs addiction or drug use isn't the leading cause for homelessness in america.

While there are many drivers of modern-day homelessness, it is largely the result of failed policies; severely underfunded programs that have led to affordable housing shortages; wages that do not keep up with rising rents and housing costs; inadequate safety nets; inequitable access to quality health care (including mental health care), education, and economic opportunity; and mass incarceration. In effect, more than half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and one crisis away from homelessness.

there is a clean-cut answer housing and mental health/social services.

even that reddit screenshot you shared is about people who went without help for so long they've conditioned themselves to that life when they likely weren't raised that way.
