Why do you want an external SSD? Wouldn't an external SSD use the power of the USB 3.0?

Yes. External SSDs have higher transfer speeds (theoretically), but I hear if you are not using something like Thunderbolt you can't achieve speeds that are a noticeable difference. Also I believe they have a lower failure rate

USB 3.0 could handle transfer rate up to 5gbs

so would you say they are just Hype? SSD seems only worth it for booting an OS more so than storing media.

Yep. The cost per GB is too damn high to justify a external SSD drive for storage.

Using an external HDD drive w/ USB 3 can do very nicely as far as throughput and stability.

Even a USB3 flash drive can work in a pinch.

If you want to store videos and music or whatever you dont need an SSD.
If you are installing games and programs or doing work/editing (sony vegas, rendering,design... that sort of thing) you want an SSD, and not an external one.

SATA 3.0 >>> USB 3.0 >>> SATA 2.0

but I agree a SSD for storage is a waste

Yeah, their transfer speeds are gonna be capped by the connecting cables if they aren't on the fastest SATA.
But I didn't feel like getting into that... they'll find out about the cables when they go to connect the drive.

...and they'll need a SSD mount if they get an internal (which I reccomend over the external ones)

you don't have to install anything on the ssd except the os...gaming doesn't need it to my knowledge for video editing I'd imagine the rendering would be faster if you have a capable cpu, but other then that know actual advantage while actually editing

the OS doesn't "need" a SSD either, but it makes everything better. with games you get much faster load times, and it can help with streaming issues in some open world games

when I first got my SSD I thought it was only good for the OS. but after putting a few games on there, I copped another (bigger) SSD just for games
