Because he isnt the goat of that era, as far as straight rappin and being lyrical there were cats better, dude is remembered for his commercial appeal more than anything else these days.

Its because Biggie, Jay-Z and Nas were better. Plain and simple

Seems like the West Coast pushed the 80s era NYC rappers out of the paint. Then Biggie came and reclaimed the title and resurrected NYC on a global scale. I’m too young to have lived it but I’d imagine LL’s breakout songs probably sounded dated by the mid 90s.

Um no…Mr Smith (95) was full of breakout radio friendly songs - doin it, hey lover, loungin - plus he had the Canibus battle that put respect back on his lyricism, and in addition to tracks like I shot ya and 4,3,2,1…mid - late 90’s LL was still very much on musically, plus he was at his peak culturally with Gap ads, the face of Fubu, movies and his sitcom.

The creative peak of his career was in 1990,, and although mama said is a classic, his work wasn’t on the level of what wu-tang, nas,, tribe, OutKast, etc were putting out in the 90s..
