I would say it depends on the state your in. I know in Texas if you graduate in the top 10% no college in Texas can deny you. The only time I would say its important is when it comes to scholarships. If you have a GPA of 3.5+ most students should be able to get plenty of money for college.

Very true. Not to mention the notion that A doesn't always equal B. A great student is NOT guaranteed to be a great worker and a great worker doesn't necessarily mean that that person was a great student. Way too many factors go into this sh!t and it's much more complicated than some grade point average can ever justify.

Great points here.

According to my good friend who works there, the president of NYU graduated from a CUNY school back in the day with a 2.2 GPA. If true, and my boy would have zero reason to lie to me, let that sink in for a second on how important accumulated statistics are in determining real-world worth.
Going to college to get a 2.2 seems like a huge waste of money....

For regular grad school, most programs require at least a 3.0.

To get into a competitive law school, you need a good GPA. Also, GPA calculation for law school includes ALL courses taken (even courses taken and repeated…both grades will count).

Berkeley is one of the top schools that specifically asks you to calculate your GPA based on your last two years of coursework.

Great standardized test scores can cancel out a not so stellar GPA.

2.2, 3.2, 4.0... Who gives a fukk??? They all get you a degree which opens doors, and when I first got out of college not one prospective employer I interviewed with gave two damns about a GPA, heck none of them even asked to see a transcript or diploma.

And trust me when I tell you I've seen numerous occasions where a person who had a mediocre college transcript outwork and outlast the new kid who just earned honors on their degree and because of that they thought they were hot-sh!t that the rest of the world would bow to on that strength of "my high GPA" that they're so quick to tell you about when ya'll go out for after-work drinks. That is, until a couple months in when the realization finally sets in that they're no longer at State U and no one gives 2 fukks anymore on how you aced your Civics final.

Someone with a 3.5 probably has more applicable knowledge than someone with a 2.2 coming out of college let's not kid ourselves... And why waste your parents money to get a 2.2? Just sad and overall terrible advice to give someone....

I'm sorry I can't agree with that first part. The person with the 3.5 could just be a better student, that's all. Hell, applicable knowledge doesn't truly begin to develop until you're actually in the real world and applying those actual skills, and if the 2.2 person is better organized, fits in better in their workplace, and is generally a better worker (which is not determined by their life as a student), then that 3.5 is meaningless.

I understand what you're saying and to an extent I agree, but I've been working in education long enough to know that two smart people can have grades situated at different ends of the rainbow, and it's way more complicated than simply who's smarter than who. Take note though, I'm talking about 2 people with comparable intelligence levels, but GPA & test scores is in no way an end all be all, nor is it a predictor of any sort.

As for wasting the parent's money, that's cause the parents can't brag about little Johnny's 4.0 to their friends. Just get the damn degree, once you're in the real world and you at least have a Bachelors, the whole damn game re-sets anyway.

Yeah but there is no guarantee that an employer thinks the way you do so telling someone that a 2.2 or a 3.5 doesn't matter is just bad advice:laugh:

I understand your opinion about being a good fit in a company, but a 2.2 gps individual won't even get a chance to interview at most quality companies.

I've worked for start ups in the bay and I saw resume after resume of post grads get tossed before they even get past a qtr of the page due to gpa...

Edit: Just saw that you referring to the Berkeley comment. Yes, Berkeley does that for all of their grad programs.

It's the rules created by the Law School Admissions Council (Policies Related to Transcript Summarization). Everyone has to calculate their grades the same way so that schools can make fair comparisons between applicants.

The only way the original grade for a repeated course is not used is if the school does not publish the original grade or number of credit hours on the transcript.
