It's not very important unless you plan to go to graduate school, law, med, dental, nursing, etc.

What the real world wants is experience and see that you can do the job right rather than your GPA. But GPA is still an indicator of your performance and work ethic.

I graduated with a 2.59 w/ biology degree and I worked while in school. I have been employed since I graduated school 2011. I know from experience that gpa does not really matter, just like what TZiggy said it's experience. Starting out I just did basic lab work, you know getting your feet wet. Then I did my year and a half and bounced; and found a better job doing formulations and running more complex test.

Really it's about getting that first job and grinding there and learn everything; then push to something better. The only time a gpa comes into play (as far as a career/working/even graduate school) is for research positions and also weeding out/making the company look better. The reason why some colleges and employers have gpa requirements is to say "the people who work here or graduated from here averaged 3.5 and above gpa's." Really it's all for show.

Also on the other hand a person with a high gpa ex:3.65 with no work/volunteer experience; would not get picked up because they just studied and probably can not balance different factors. As apposed to a person whom graduated with a 2.67 gpa and worked 2 part time jobs and volunteer; they would get pick up faster because they demonstrated excellent balance of school and work.

Good thing I did some volunteer work in my last years :wow:

According to my good friend who works there, the president of NYU graduated from a CUNY school back in the day with a 2.2 GPA. If true, and my boy would have zero reason to lie to me, let that sink in for a second on how important accumulated statistics are in determining real-world worth.

You can straight up lie about all that GPA shyt, here the Dean of MIT for TWENTY EIGHT years at MIT. She didn't even have an undergrad degree

and then you have this:
9 Presidential Candidates Who Weren't Great Students | Mental Floss

Of course it will look better to have a better GPA but there probably more important factors

Very true. Not to mention the notion that A doesn't always equal B. A great student is NOT guaranteed to be a great worker and a great worker doesn't necessarily mean that that person was a great student. Way too many factors go into this sh!t and it's much more complicated than some grade point average can ever justify.

GPA can be a very garbage metric. Im at a school where the difference between an A and a C could simply be the semester you took the course [a different teacher teaching it]. Some teachers only hand out a certain amount of A's, etc.

Also some ppl study abroad and some of the tough classes that they may not have done so well in, they take abroad in which it's basically pass fail and the final grade doesn't factor into the GPA

I think it depends on the field of study and also the person who is doing the hiring. Some hiring managers have a bias for higher GPA because they had one and like to hire "like minded" people
while other may have skidded by and know that its all bullshyt and just want a person with drive and common sense

and then there are others people ( like where I work) who only care that you have a degree - not giving a fukk where you got it,,what your GPA is...just have that paper to get this paper

Going to college to get a 2.2 seems like a huge waste of money....
:manny: I wouldn't call it a waste

Someone with a 3.5 probably has more applicable knowledge than someone with a 2.2 coming out of college let's not kid ourselves... And why waste your parents money to get a 2.2? Just sad and overall terrible advice to give someone....

From first hand knowledge this is 100% completely false.

I know a guy who failed calculus twice. Just isn't that great at school. But can destroy and rebuild your car in 30 secs or less.

Yeah but what about the applicable knowledge you gain from actually learning the shyt :dead:

It is safe to say that the person who isn't putting in effort in getting a good gpa is probably not going to put effort into making connections...

You might as well not go to college, save your money and just focus on making connection

Okay, so he should save his money, not go to school and focus on his trade which is building cars...

My comment is more for people who are going to college and relying on this degree for their career. Your friend obviously has other options and talents...

Best believe if he applied to one of these start ups out here in the bay, they aren't going to hire him just because "he can build a car"

I don't necessarily disagree with your point. His father is a professor at the school so I guess he gets free tuition :yeshrug:

For Grad School, Professional School (law, medical, MPAs, etc)..it matters as a cut off...

For some ultra competitive jobs in science and engineering...it matters..

In most jobs...it doesn't...

School Brand name and connections are more important in my experience
