They say dinosaurs weren't cold blooded which is why they went extinct and crocodiles and alligators didn't. They probably ate the dead dinosaurs and then hunkered down for the long hot summer.

you can expand this, think of these 2 groups as similar in terms of sharing a common ancestor with other animals in the same group:
A. humans, orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees
B. wolves, coyotes, dingoes, foxes
asking why are there apes and monkeys still around is akin to asking: … “Err..duurrr , well there are wolves still around how did coyotes evolve from them.”
