There are suburbs in Jersey, across the river from Manhattan, that are far more urban than parts of Houston-proper or LA.

Ehhh, its kinda a grey area with Hollis.
Hollis is a neighborhood in a NYC borough, but function wise and landscape wise, depending on how you look at it it might be a suburb. It's mostly houses, no subway service, only buses and you need a car to run errands.
The same grey area applies to most of Staten Island

There aren't that many "city"-cities in the US that are densely populated urban areas outside of the Northeast and Chicago. Go to Phoenix, AZ, the downtown is dead af, and the place is one big strip mall suburb.
You can fit NYC & Chicago combined inside of Houston's city limits.

When I went out to Chicago I stayed with my homie from Jolliet. Is that a suburb or a part of the CHI? cause he claimed the CHI.
Apparently Indiana brehs claim the CHI 2......you're from there right? is that fact or fiction?

Joliet like 40 miles outside the city, ~1 hour away on a good day. He will claim Chicago to people not from here the same as someone from Long Beach might claim LA to outsiders b/c it's easier to just say Chicago rather than explain where tf Joliet is. Joliet is one of those suburbs that has close to 200k population, it's a functioning city on its own.
