how in the hell did you start?:mindblown:

Put me on to the first step. Can I go to the YMCA and just ask, “hey, y’all need some help?” without them handing me a mop and broom:wtf:?

I know I can’t just pop up at a school and volunteer but if y’all got any suggestions, specifically black organizations - help me out.

First you need to find a non profit you are interested in. Then it's as easy as telling them you'd like to help volunteer. Most of these non profits love volunteer workers and will find stuff for you to do. They more then likely won't have you cleaning toilets. The key is finding an organization you want to support and help. I'm not sure what organizations are available in your community, but find ones that interest you and just start sending cold emails offering your volunteer services.

It was court appointed community service. 150 hours. I smashed through it in a month.

In the uk we have DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) formerly the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau)
Do you have an equivalent in the US? If so make sure you have an up to date one

Yeah, definitely agree with this approach.

A lot of times people say 'community work' and its just a really, really, really broad term. When I was out in Charlotte I started with my campus youth mentorship programs then ended up branching into boys & girls club. There one of the people I worked with put me onto fundraising events for the local women's shelters. From there I got some info on the best ways to link with food drives. So on and so forth. Get your foot in the door and you'll naturally find your way to something you love to support.

Sometimes it won't even feel like work at all.

Approach someone who works at the place you want to work at and ask if there is anything you can do while letting them know the skills you have. It wasn't that hard for me, I was college educated willing to be a mentor.

Exactly. More often then not you will get to know community volunteers and they expand your options and introduce you to other opportunities. I've gotten into a lot more local volunteer work supporting events in the city. I used to do a lot of Habitat, United Way, etc... and while all are great organizations I feel helping out local businesses do events that help the city grow is what I really enjoy.

Thanks for this info, breh. I didn’t think about going the non profit route.

Boys and girls club and Big brother big sister always appreciate volunteers. You can also check with day cares believe it or not. If trying to join an organization, don't be afraid to ask them. They will happily point you in the right direction, especially if it's a solid chapter

Dope! How much of your free time did that take up? I know it sounds fukked up, I don’t wanna be married to work and volunteer groups
