He never wanted to leave to begin with, even when get offered the huge deal from WCW he told Vince to just honor his current deal, but he was making too much for too long and at the time Vince couldn't afford it.

At the last minute, Vince offered him to stay under the same deal, as WWE rose prices on the In your house ppvs and got out of the red. But the six month booking plan included 2 losses to Shawn and him putting Austin over. Bret wasn't putting Shawn over under any circumstance unless Shawn lost to him first. So he took the 3 mil from WCW

People have reported he made as much as 5 mill a year.

I think Brets pride was always his own worst enemy tbh

Meh it's what stopped him from being Cowboy Bret hart in the 80s and long forgotten
