Same reason you didn't see a skirt hemline above the ankle or an exposed shoulder in 1880; we all used to be a helluva lot more ashamed of women's bodies. We've been getting better since the second half of the 20th Century, but let's face it.... a species being disgusted by the celebration of its own mothers isn't the best reflection of its psychological health. There should be no more beautiful sight to someone who loves humanity than a mother nursing a healthy child.

I'm a guy so my body will never do anything as amazing, but if I could grow a person inside me believe I'd be showing off about it during the handful times it ever happened to me. Hell, 'grammers show off when they achieve the incredible feats of feeding or clothing themselves for the day... I understand showing off when they create a new human being from scratch a hell of a lot more.

Well, since you asked - our mothers and grandmothers didn't breastfeed in public because most of them weren't breastfeeding at all. First, homemade concoctions of animal milk and various ingredients and then powdered or canned formulas were sold as being more healthful than natural breast milk, more convenient for women who had to work out of the home (basically all working-class women since forever. the idea of women staying at home and doing no labor for pay was a post WWII anomaly), and just generally more 'modern'.

The ones who did continue to breast feed have struggled to do so in public for years, but continue to be punished by police and security guards imposing modesty by force. You should familiarize yourself with the work of the La Leche League, who have been struggling to normalize breast feeding since before you or I were born. It's not a new movement, at all.
