New York State Assemblyman Charles Barron warned that “violence is inevitable” if former NYPD officer Peter Liang is not sentenced to prison for shooting Akai Gurley in 2014.
A group of protesters gathered outside the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office after it was announced that DA Ken Thompson had recommended a sentence of home confinement and probation for Liang, instead of prison time. “We will not forget this,” Barron said to the crowd. “Even Martin Luther King — the prince of peace — said that riots are the voices of the unheard.”
“Don’t make us bring Ferguson to New York City,” Barron continued. The former Black Panther told the crowd that Thompson’s “hypocrisy is just a recommendation,” and implored the sentencing judge to “ignore this, and do the right thing.” If the judge refuses to sentence Liang to prison, the assemblyman threatened that “we will shut this city down, Ken Thompson. wherever you go, we should be there.”
Gurley’s family also decried Thompson’s recommendation not to seek prison time for the convicted felon. Hertencia Peterson, Gurley’s aunt, said that Thompson is “just as guilty as if you’d pulled the trigger. We trusted you, and you hoodwinked us. You will always have Akai Gurley’s blood on your hands.”
Riots have to happen if Liang gets off. 20 years or New York burns.
