i was at elektra in '94 with my homie latief (produced the mad wunz & late model sedan for masta ace) and i actually got to sit down with dante ross (stop dissin dante on records yall!) and some other dude during the mix down. on gang i thought it was the most incredible record i ever heard. i tried to play it cool being that these are industry nikkas and i don't want to look like a square hype beast but it was retarded as fukk so i started covering my face while i bopped my head
nikkas looked at me after a while and started dying laughing. latief wasn't the biggest rza fan (or beatminerz SMH) so he thought it was whatever and this nikka dante had nothing but criticisms for it about the drums. i'm looking at these two dudes along with the asian engineer like WTF?!? but hey man, that's why they were who they were, they heard music differently than i did and dissected it in the pursuit of perfection. to his credit dante predicted that it was a smash
by the end of the session i knew most of his verse by heart. so i went back to the hood and started spittin odb's verse in fragments with some mistakes here and there. dudes went crazy lol. btw i'm absolutely nobody so don't think for a minute that i'm some industry insider or something (i know how nikkas do on the internet with the ducktales lmao). i'm just some unknown square/nerdy east flatbush nikka who used to live 10 blocks from lord digga & godfather don, 15 from fu schnickens and 20 from da bush babees and about 35 from the cella dwellas so i knew rappers on some hood shyt. rhymed myself but was mad corny lol, but nikkas fukked with me off the strength of my passion for this rap shyt. anyway that's my brooklyn zoo story man, wish i got to meet ason but it wasn't in the cards may he rest on peace
I remember when da bush babies did a video at 40th park on Farragut road, man I ran down there to be in it. Man they just wrapped when I got there.
