You don't pull it out (aka brandishing which is illegal in 50 states) to scare or warn someone. And when you shoot you shoot to kill, not injure, not scare, however if you see a point where you can escape a potentially deadly situation at the time or after shooting you should take it. That doesn't mean run home and evade the law, that means escape the the point of safety and report the situation.
