Boston Celtic Jared Sullinger appeared in Waltham District Court to face domestic violence charges stemming from an incident in Waltham over the weekend.
A Waltham police official confirmed the arrest of Sullinger, a 21-year-old Ohio native and former standout at Ohio State. According to the Celtics website, Sullinger is a power forward who is six foot, nine inches tall, and weighs 260 pounds.
Sullinger’s rookie season last year was cut short by injury. He played in 45 games and averaged 6 points and 5 rebounds per game before missing the rest of the season with a back injury.
Details of the arrest were not immediately available, but authorities said a warrant was issued for his arrest over the weekend.
The incident comes after the domestic violence murder of Jennifer Martel in a Waltham apartment she had shared with her long-time boyfriend, Jared W. Remy, the son of Boston Red Sox announcer and former player Jerry Remy.
Martel was allegedly killed by Jared Remy after he was released on personal recognizance following an arraignment on charges of physically assaulting Martel. Some believe that it is during this time that he possibly contacted Sullinger, the former Buckeye.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan’s office did not seek a dangerousness hearing for Remy, a decision now being reviewed by former Essex District Attorney Kevin Burke and Norfolk First Assistant District Attorney Jeanmarie Carroll.
Remy has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail. The police are now likely searching for a connection in the incidents. While unconfirmed, sources say it is quite possible that Sullinger is directly or indrectly guilty for both crimes. Time will tell.
