He was a legend. Might not have been a music legend, but Nip was always bigger than music.
His body of work in his community is legendary.
Just look at the outpouring of love from his community and beyond at his funeral.

Lets not get carried away. Before he passed, he was not selling out Staples by himself. If he could, he would have. Living in LA, he was not mentioned like that. Most people in LA didn't know about all of his community work till after he died. He gained a lot of fans when he died. Those are facts

Nobody is disputing his status on the music level. He was underground until his last year of his life with Victory Lap.
The funeral was free to the public if I'm not mistaken.
The facts are also his body of work in his community.
When you look at what he did for his community, it is legendary.
He didn't just talked the talk, he walked the walk.
And for people to speak on somebody who did so much for his community in such a backhanded way of "keeping it real" is foul.

LA supports their own like few other rap cities, so Nipsey definitely got play and attention there...but not to the level of bigger artists in the city. Nor was he doing huge shows in LA or Cali in general. A lot of the outpouring of love we're seeing now - especially all these men posting hustler lyrics/quotes from him, or chicks posting #relationshipgoals shyt from him and Lauren - come from people who didn't even hear Victory Lap until after he died.
"Legend" isn't about numbers alone though. How many numbers did Grandmaster Flash put on the board, in the grand scheme of things? How many numbers did MF DOOM put up, or Kool G Rap, etc. It's about impact and influence. And I think the love and insane level of admiration that was poured out after Nip's death makes it very clear he made an impact. You can make an impact in death....he's not the first person to do that nor will he be the last.

I thought his music was pretty average. I guess that’s what separates MF DOOM and Kool G Rap from him to me. Those guys authored some of the best raps of all time. His philanthropy was admirable though.
Hard to get excited for over era rappers though. The music is too pimped out and goofy to be passionate about.
