I've said it before I'll say it again. Football players are crazy. Nothing you see done on the field should surprise you. I had teammates that purposely pee'd on themselves so they'd stank so bad the linemen wouldn't block em....
It never worked, but that never stopped those nuts from trying and that's not even mentioning the shyt (pun intended) to their gloves....like I said

This is fukking stupid, I played football and was also in the trenches [TE] the last thing you're worried about when blocking is how a nikka smells. Especially if you've been in any football locker room, it stinks and you get used to it, being outside in fresh air is actually a relief. Those guys you played with were not the sharpest tools in the shed.

In their brain it made a difference. You know damn well cats will do anything if they think it gives them an edge. I had teammates take out stitching on the inside of their pants because they thought it made them faster. Other cats got spats because they thought "I look faster so I am faster"
I got more stories....football players are nuts.
Edit: My nose tuned out the smell in the locker room. Fresh air vs locker room never made a difference, but pee soaked pants after a quarter or two did stank.

About the throwback player, not sure if anyone saw John Madden and the 76 Raiders on NFL network, but the type of behavior Burfict exhibits was embraced back in the day.
The raiders had a pad specialist on their team who would put plaster cast in their arm pads. Had one dude who had a "faux broken thumb" wrapped up that he used exclusively for jukking defensive players in the gut with.
And madden condoned it and still does.
