I'm an artist and I've only just found out about this sub-forum :snoop:.

I only want to have two rules for this thread.

1. 4 pics per post MAX, just so the thread doesn't get overloaded.

2. Cite each image with it's title and the artist that made it.

I'm going to try to update this thread as much as I can.

Anyway, I'm going to start this thread with my favourite artist. Francis Bacon.

That one's really nice :leon:

It was based on Velasquez's 'portrait of innocent X'

Pictures don't do francis bacon paintings justice. They literally stop you in your tracks like :ohhh:. He's regarded as one of the best artists of the 20th century, and for good reason. Plus, he never had formal art trainging from what I remember.

I saw the lying figure painting atr the d'Orsay when I was in Paris and was just staring at it for 10 minutes.

When you stare at a painting like that, what do you look for/at exactly ?

When you stare at a painting like that, what do you look for/at exactly ?

Unorthodox compositions and how it works.

Unusual colour combinations and how it works along with the composition.

Painting execution.

Emotion/Vibe coming from the painting and the ideas trying to be conveyed to the audience.

Bacon's painting's are very intense, jarring and dark, for which I'm very drawn to. Bacon was a pretty fucced up person and you can just feel the pain in the paintings. I usually look at art as a whole on a surface level but with Bacon I just have an affinity for his work. i can't feel put a finger on it, I just feel where the guy was coming from lol. Sorry I couldn't articulate my points in the way you was probably looking for. I feel the same way I do about Bacon as I do with Francisco Goya (for whom's work I'm going to post tomorrow).

Nah that's good, you're looking. Most of the time, when I look at a painting (which might be interesting), I don't look further than the facade. Maybe sometimes I'm trying to understand the meaning or what is displayed but I don't really go deep. It's an interesting point of view for when I'll go to a museum back. Will try to understand the exeuction more than the image.

Dpn't get it twisted, we're probably the same. I only get into the technical aspects when I like a piece of art at face value. The painting/sculpture whatever needs to catch my eye first before I pay it any mind meaning wise etc. I'm of the thinking that art should be able to do what the artist set out to do visually, above anything else.

My fav artist Wassily Kadinsky. It's something about how these paintings affect my mood. whenever I'm depressed I can go back to his work and just automatically feel better. Only other artist that had that affect on me was rothko, but he brings me down instead of picking me up

What is he supposed to convey with those paintings ?
I don't really understand them although the first one look like a painted or somebody eating. Could you explain these for the non-connaisseurs ? :jawalrus:

Kadinsky pretty much started abstract art. What he's trying to do is represent his inner spirit at the time of each painting. abstract art and music are closely related. It's like a musician grabbing his guitar and playing the first riff that comes to mind. or a rapper just randomly freestyling and spitting whats in his soul.

In that 1st painting, I think kadinsky had to be in love or his life was going really well because all those images represent flight or air to me. shyt looks like planets or birds taking wing. You can pretty much interpret how you want with his works.

I see. I always had problems understanding/appreciating abstract art (and contemporary art) because contrary to other genres that are more figurative, abstract and contemporary art (installations mostly) are kinda all about the viewer's mind and experience. I find it difficult to enjoy those because there are no real stuff to understand or expertise to view but an array of emotions to feel or some subjective thoughts to have. For example, I like the third painting but I can't go any further than the image and I feel like I miss the point :ld:
