which would you guys recommend? can a 1070 perform as good as an xbox one x?

PC always. 1070 will run better even when the new gen consoles arrives
Xbox one X will run games "better" or more stable.
And a lot of games don't support HDR on pc.

This is subjective, and borderline a lie. PC gaming is cool but you will not avoid having to tinker with some shyt eventually. shyt usually pops up at inppportune times as well
Your doing yourself and extreme disservice if you chose and Xbox one x over a gtx 1070. You'll be able to play all the exclusives and games either on par or better. if you have an Xbox one already it's a waste of an upgrade in regards to getting a gtx 1070.
Why in the world would someone even consider an Xbox One X? PC any day.

Yeah the 1070 is a beast (especially at 1080p/60fps)
But.......we have to remember how well the console games are optimized. PC gaming seems to be forever in limbo land until certain features are added (4K textures, SLI, 3 monitors, etc), and so many games are broken at launch.
I might buy X1X games over PC ones, and I have a very nice gaming pc. Optimization is just so big. Devs aren't great at hiring the best port companies. A lot of them are eastern European companies (no -cism), they just aren't as good as other countries for ports
But....(again....lol)....I would buy a pc before an X1X. PC gaming just offers so much more. Try to get a budget over 1K. It'll help out a lot. I have a monster PC and play at 5K, but still.....some games just don't work because of optimization issues.

and I'm trying to figure out what you're saying about Eastern European devs. those are some of the best IMO (Witcher, Stalker, Metro, Arma, etc)
